Epic Home Cinema and Procella THX Certified Screening Room in New Jersey Wins CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Technical Design Award

Each year, CEDIA recognizes the best of the best in the residential electronic systems industry.  Manufacturers, residential electronic system contractors and CEDIA volunteers are recognized for their achievements and contributions to the association.  On Saturday, September 25, awards were presented at the CEDIA Expo.  The THX Certified Screening Room in a residence in New Jersey was the Gold Award winner in its category.  Congratulations to Epic Home Cinema!

P815 Wins CEPro Best Award

Winner of two awards at CEDIA Expo 2010, the P815 L/C/R speaker is the sole winner in CEPro magazine's CEPro Best Awards, in the Floorstanding/Shelf Loudspeaker category.

From the award description:

Audiophile accuracy and cinema impact make Procella’s THX Approved P815 the ultimate home cinema/screening room main speaker.  The biamplified (700+700 watts) full-range 15” three-way speaker uses pro components, including a high-frequency compression driver with Procella-designed waveguide in place of dome tweeters, for precise directivity control and much greater output and dynamic range.

P815 Wins Exc!te Award From Custom Retailer Magazine

Procella's flagship P815 biamplified full-range main speaker has just received the prestigious Excite Award from Custom Retailer magazine.  These awards are given annually at a special reception during the CEDIA Expo, and are given to the very most exciting high-performance products in the custom audio-video category.   With its ability to work in the largest home cinemas and its extraordinary audio quality, the P815 is a natural for this award.

Procella Audio Speakers THX Approved and Used In THX Certified World-Class Residential Home Screening Room

We're very pleased to announce that THX has granted the highly coveted THX certification to a world-class residential home screening room that uses a 14-speaker Procella Audio system. Located in New Jersey, the room was designed, constructed and calibrated by Dennis Erskine, Sherman Peiffer and Steve Kujala of Epic Home Cinema of Marietta, Georgia. The Procella models used in the theater include three active P815s for screen channels, six passive P8 speakers for the surround channels, plus two P18 and three P10 active subwoofers.

In addition to this certification, we can announce that Procella's top speakers are THX Approved for integration into professional rooms, including THX Certified Screening Rooms and THX pm3 Studios (professional Mixing, Monitoring and Mastering). The Procella speakers include the P815 active screen channel speaker, the P8 surround speaker (which can also be used as a screen channel), and the P18 active subwoofer.

For the New Jersey system, the Epic Home Cinema team did an incredible job with all aspects of this room, from design to execution. I've never experienced a residential theater with such a superb acoustical environment and such a high quality of construction.

The goal of THX certification is to build a residential home screening room that can closely mirror the acoustic performance of a full-blown commercial theater or professional studio. The room itself must meet a number of performance thresholds and design specifications, including room dimensions, the acoustical environment, sound isolation, viewer sight lines, selection of components, and ultimately, the overall image and sound quality. After the New Jersey home theater was constructed and equipment installed, its performance was evaluated through a battery of measurements performed onsite by THX engineers.

In addition to Procella speakers, the screening room also includes THX Certified and Approved components from Meridian Audio, QSC Audio Products, Runco and Stewart Filmscreen.

"The theater's owner came to Epic Home Cinema after interviewing several integrators. While each assured him they could build an excellent home theater, none were able to fulfill his request to provide objective standards by which to measure the theater's performance," stated Epic principal Sherman Peiffer. "Based on the client's input, we elected to bring in THX as an impartial third party, because of their clearly defined performance standards and their ability to audit the performance of the completed cinema. Once the client understood the THX certification process, his decision was made much easier. During the design phase, THX worked closely with our design and engineering teams, reviewing our work every step of the way. We take pride in being able to say the results speak for themselves."

THX certification (consumer) of the Procella speakers is pending final testing by THX Ltd.

Procella Digital Cinema Installation at Finnkino in Helsinki

Ari Saarinen of Finnish exhibitor Finnkino demonstrated impressive digital cinema outside of Helsinki using a solid (non-perforated) screen and speakers placed above the screen. The values of a non-perforated screen are several: they reflect more light (more efficient), there is no opportunity for the pixel array structure of the projector and the perf pattern of the screen to create a Moire pattern, and the sound system does not require the tremendous high frequency boost needed to overcome the high frequency absorption of the screen. The sound system was developed by Sweden-based Anders Uggelberg, of Procella Audio. Your author was not the only one impressed. Rolv Gjestland of Film & Kino reports that the system will be installed in some of Norway’s new digital cinema deployments. Anders says he has not publicized the system as yet beyond the Nordic countries.

Procella Speaker System Powers 3D Demo Room at UK CEDIA Expo

Perhaps the highlight of the UK CEDIA Expo/Home Technology Event 2010 was the show-organized 3D Feature room.  Sponsored by AWE Europe, CSE Custom, Digital Projection and Procella’s distributor, Pulse Marketing, the exhibit showcased 3D content from Sky (satellite) and Blu-ray disc,  offering visitors an immersive large room audio-video environment in which they could experience multiple ways to enjoy this exciting new technology.

Procella was selected for the surround system in the 6.5m x 7.5m (21.3’ x 24.6’) room, which, with 3 rows and 21 seats, was built to replicate a large dedicated home theater.  In combination with the latest 3D projector technology and a 4m wide acoustically transparent screen, the speaker system included three P8 screen channel speakers and two P15 active subwoofers in a baffle wall, with four P6 surround speakers on the side walls.

Procella’s Chuck Back worked with Pulse’s Dave Phillips and Barry Sheldrick to install and set up the audio system.  Procella proved to be the ideal choice, easily capable of producing the necessary output levels and dynamic range for the room size and listening distances.  The cinema impact it created through reference level playback in such a large listening space effectively completed the immersive experience. The surround processing were provided by Arcam.

Numerous visitors to the room offered rave reviews, including Sky’s Senior Product Development Manager, John Dollin, who described the 3D room as “the best [I've] ever seen”.  Robert Hallam, CEDIA Chairman for Region 1, said, “Visitors took the opportunity to explore some really exciting innovations, especially as far as 3D and HDMI were concerned . . . stand-outs for me included our 3D demo area which played to packed houses each and every day of the show.”
